November has arrived, and with it come kickoff temperatures forecast in the 50s for Saturday. Finally, we’re getting some real football weather, but beyond the crisp temps, November also brings with it a thin margin for error for Mizzou if they want to continue to compete for a berth in the College Football Playoff.
I think I can speak for most Tiger fans when I say that a season which sees consequential games played in November is a season that can be considered successful, at least up until this
point. The Tigers enter the final month of the regular season with plenty left to play for; at 6-2, a CFP spot is still within reach, but the path there is about to get considerably more difficult.
That path starts Saturday with a visit from Texas. The Longhorns arrive in Columbia with their own playoff ambitions, along with a résumé that includes wins over Ohio State and at Tennessee. There is a pretty simple way for Mizzou to keep its College Football Playoff hopes alive: beat Texas on Saturday.
That might sound obvious since the more wins the Tigers accrue, the more their playoff chances increase, but the stakes for this specific game go a bit deeper than that. This is virtually a must-win game for the Tigers while Texas has built a résumé that could survive a loss in Columbia and still leave the Longhorns with a reasonable path into the field.
If both teams finish 9-3 with the Tigers dropping a game to the Longhorns, I have a hard time seeing the selection committee choosing Mizzou over Texas, and that’s not just because Texas has the name brand. They also have the résumé cushion that Mizzou does not.
The biggest difference between these two teams right now is the quality of their wins. Texas has already beaten Ohio State and at Tennessee, two victories that will carry significant weight when the playoff committee starts comparing teams with similar records. The Longhorns also have a chance to add another impressive result with a road game against LSU still on the schedule.
Mizzou, unfortunately, doesn’t have that same collection of high-caliber wins. While the Tigers’ 45-17 demolition of Florida looked like an elite résumé builder at the time, unfortunately the Gators have fallen off considerably since then even despite a win over the Longhorns in Austin.
The same goes for the Mississippi State loss to kick off conference play. At the time, the Bulldogs looked like a quality opponent and a team that could finish the season competing for their own playoff bid. Sadly, an injury suffered by Kamario Taylor (ironically against Mizzou) has sent their season in the wrong direction, and that loss no longer looks nearly as respectable as it did a month ago.
Texas, on the other hand, already has the kind of wins Mizzou needs. If the Longhorns beat LSU next week, they would have another elite road victory on the ledger. Add a head-to-head win over Mizzou, and the comparison becomes pretty straightforward.
Could two 9-3 SEC teams make the playoff? It’s possible to imagine a scenario where the conference gets enough teams into the field to make that happen, but I wouldn’t count on it. And if the committee has to choose between two teams with the same record, and a head-to-head result to boot, Texas would have a pretty substantial advantage. Mizzou cannot afford to give the Longhorns that opportunity.
The other problem is that Mizzou’s remaining schedule is considerably more difficult than just about anyone else’s in the SEC. Even if the Tigers lose to Texas, they would still have opportunities to improve their résumé. But the idea that they can simply win their remaining games and 9-3 is easier said than done.
First, the Tigers will have to travel to Athens to face one of the best teams in the country, and that is a game where Mizzou will likely enter as a significant underdog. Georgia has shown some vulnerability at home this year, but the likelihood they drop two games in Athens as favorites in a single season is quite low.
Kentucky is another difficult matchup, even if the Wildcats might be a little over-ranked at this point. They’ve become one of the best stories in the SEC this season and are currently sitting atop the conference standings. Mizzou gets that game at home, which is a major advantage, but this isn’t the kind of Kentucky team that can be taken lightly.
Then there is Oklahoma. The Sooners have been a mess offensively for much of the season, and their inability to consistently run the football has been a major problem. However, the defense is still dangerous, and a team with that kind of defensive talent can make life difficult for anyone. It would be a mistake to look at Oklahoma’s offensive struggles and assume that game is already in the win column.
The point is that Mizzou doesn’t have an easy path to winning out. Texas has a difficult schedule of its own, particularly with LSU still ahead, but the Tigers have to navigate three more games against teams that present legitimate challenges after Saturday. That’s what makes the Texas game so important. A win gives Mizzou a quality victory, a head-to-head tiebreaker and at least a modicum of breathing room heading into the final stretch. A loss leaves the Tigers needing help from other teams while also trying to win games against Georgia, Kentucky and Oklahoma.
I’m not saying a 9-3 Mizzou team has absolutely no chance of making the playoff. The SEC is deep enough that the committee could be forced to make some difficult decisions, and the 2026 season has shown that just about anything can happen week-to-week in college football. That said, I don’t see a scenario where Mizzou finishes 9-3 and gets selected over a 9-3 Texas team that beat the Tigers head-to-head.
The math is pretty simple. A 10-2 finish gets Mizzou in. A 9-3 finish requires a win over Texas and a lot of help, potentially including that unlikely victory in Athens. So, win Saturday. Then go win in Athens, too, if the Tigers really want to make this interesting.
Mizzou has put itself in position to make a playoff run, and now it has to prove it belongs there. Saturday is the first, and most important, opportunity to do exactly that.
