You think there have been a lot of matches in this World Cup so far? You aren’t ready for Round 3 of the group stage which features TWO games on SIMULTANEOUSLY as each group plays at the same time to avoid collusion. My god. I’m not sure my brain can handle it. But by this time in a few days we’ll have some clarity as to who is moving on and who is going home.

Day 13 Recap
Portugal 5-0 Uzbekistan (Group K)
Goals: Ronaldo (6′, 39′), Mendez (17′), Nematov [OG] (60′), Leao (87′)

Uzbekistan. Unfortunately, Ronaldo got off the schnide on this one, scoring two goals against a hopelessly outmatched opponent. Remarkably, Ronaldo scored a brace but was still wasteful. Didn’t stop the commentators from gushing about him, though. We should note — Uzbekistan scored a rad goal that was stupidly called back by VAR for a foul just outside the box before the ball went in. It’s technically the right call, but definitely violated the Rule of Cool, which should reign in the World Cup.
England 0-0 Ghana (Group L)
Goals: none
Sort of a damp squib of a match, lessened by the inclusion of Thomas Party. Ghana sat back and played defensive terrorball the entire match, and England tried to combat it by lumping in lots of crosses from wide positions. Not an especially good match from either side; England in particular seems contractually obligated to never take 9 points from a World Cup group stage. Djed Spence had a nice match. Harry Kane not so much.
Panama 0-1 Croatia (Group L)
Goals: Budimir (54′)
This match should not have been as fun as it was. The football by either side wasn’t exactly great, but the match, spurred on by vociferous crowd support on both sides, featured lots of end to end action, exciting moves, shots, saves, and was actually quite a compelling watch. This is not the dominating Croatia side you remember, but it’s also not THAT bad — certainly good enough to get out of the group. But they’ll have to do a job to get past Ghana in Round 3.
