The Minnesota Vikings quarterback competition between J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray officially ignited at OTAs — and McCarthy’s rocky press scrum may have already shifted the narrative. On the latest episode of The Real Forno Show, Vikings beat writer and NFL draft analyst Tyler Forness and producer Dave Stefano of Vikings 1st & SKOL, broke down every angle of what went wrong for McCarthy, why Murray looked like the veteran leader Minnesota has been searching for, and what it all means for the 2025
season.
Forness pulled no punches in his assessment of McCarthy’s now-viral classroom quote — “It’s just two guys in a classroom. He sits on one side, I sit on the other side” — arguing the words themselves were less alarming than the delivery and lack of preparation behind them. “He was given the answers to the test and he still bombed it,” Forness said. “He knew all the questions were coming and he still botched it.” Stefano offered a counterpoint, suggesting McCarthy’s frustration may have been intentional motivation from head coach Kevin O’Connell: “KOC wanted him to run… Does he want somebody coming in here to take his job? No, he does not. Is he gonna express that? He obviously did.” Forness wasn’t buying it, though, noting that McCarthy had two full months to prepare polished, deflecting answers — and chose none of them. Meanwhile, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reported McCarthy “pinpointed passes with accuracy” and that “his mechanics looked polished and refined” on the field at OTAs, a detail Forness acknowledged but tempered: “Let’s see if he does it again… I wanna see consistency. I wanna see you string together three or four days and then I’ll feel really good about where we’re at.”
Key Points from the Episode:
- McCarthy’s presser was the story, not just the quote. “It’s not the words. It’s not the fact that he came off a little bitter… He was prepared — canned answers like a politician at a debate. You already know what’s coming. How are you not prepared for it?”
- Kyler Murray handled the media like a seasoned veteran. “Murray did, McCarthy didn’t. You have to shut the door… If you leave that door unlocked, they’re gonna come bursting through it.”
- The questions were not equal — and that matters. Vikings media gave Murray softer questions because it was their first face-to-face interaction. “They don’t know Kyler Murray. They know J.J. McCarthy. They’ve spoken to him for two years.”
- Forness believes Murray wins the job going away. “My projection is Murray’s gonna run away with this thing.”
- Stefano defended McCarthy’s youth and potential. “He’s only 23. He’s only played 10 games in two seasons… to give a guy less than two seasons and call him quits, I think is unfair.”
- Defensive position intrigue: Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins is getting reps with the edge rushers after slimming down, while Elijah Williams earned first-team defensive end reps — “a really good start to hopefully a breakout season.”
- Vikings GM search nearing the finish line. Minnesota has completed its second round of GM interviews and could name a hire within one to two weeks, ahead of mandatory minicamp on June 8–10.

Question of the Day:
Do you think J.J. McCarthy can still win the Vikings’ starting quarterback job over Kyler Murray — or did his OTA press scrum reveal something deeper about his readiness to lead an NFL franchise?
