Gerard Martin was one of the surprise heroes for Barcelona last season as Hansi Flick’s side picked up La Liga and Spanish Super Cup titles.
The defender has had his critics during his time in the first team but was shifted to a central defensive role and shone alongside Pau Cubarsi in the starting XI.
The end of the season and early summer brought speculation that Barca would sign a new center-back before the start of next season but that talk has gone quiet, while Martin is already thinking about
the new campaign.
According to Diario Sport, Martin cut his holidays short and has spent the last three weeks working hard to be in the best shape possible for when pre-season rolls around.
The defender has been working at the Dr Juan Boffa’s Sports Medicine Clinic on “strength sessions, stability and prevention work, mobility exercises, physical readaptation and physiotherapeutic treatment.”
The report also adds that he also followed a personal training plan while on holiday and has also been heading to the Ciutat Esportiva over the last few weeks to work out alone.
Martin enjoyed a great season last time out and his preparation for the new campaign suggests he is absolutely determined to continue in the same vein in the coming campaign.
Barca’s focus in the transfer market appears to be solely on Julian Alvarez, meaning a center-back may not arrive after all and Martin could remain first choice going into the new campaign.
