With baseball and softball going and the Spring Game only a few weeks away, I figured the green light for spring semester tailgating is damn well lit. And in the cool weather, what warms us up quicker, both from cooking heat and whatever level of pepper intensity is simmered within, than some good meaty chili.
However, over the years, folks started doing things to and with chili which seemed odd to many and delicious to many more. What was your preference?
Also, track and field is up and running and the B1G indoor season just concluded with the NCAA’s and outdoor season just around the corner. And I wondered what folks considered the toughest event, completely leaving it to you how to define “toughest”, be it athlete’s bodies failing them completely in a distance event, vomiting to the point of dry heaving after a intense shorter event – or a pile of them – or perhaps the injury risk of falling two stories head first.
Here’s what Corn Nation readers said about both:
- It is chili and cinnamon buns with the clear majority of 55% – 10% higher than the other three options combined. Color me surprised at the margin of victory.
- Now, the buns and chili may get boost over Skyline/Cincinnati Chili due to it being more native to our region. But 55% – 11%? Naw, that’s a clear winner in everywhere but maybe Ohio, and that’s a solid maybe.
- Only 25% said get it all away from me and I thought that would be higher.
- To emphasize the dominance of Cinnamon – the buns, not the dancer – only 9% said they go for both mixes.
- The two-day test of the decathlon came in the clear winner here at 50%. This surprised me a little as the Olympic decathlon was huge many years go with it’s winner being unofficially crowned The Greatest Athlete in the World and ending up on a Wheaties box. The infamous Dan s. Dave marketing campaign before the 1992 Olympics may have helped stall fan interest – Google “dan vs. dave olympics” and the AI overview will actually give you a pretty accurate description of its massive failure.
- The marathon only received 14% which I did think would be higher. But it also seems to be an event lacking the rock stars of the 70’s and some of the 80’s when running was king,
- The 400 meter hurdles finished 2nd and kudos to those 19% of voters. I bet many of them could tell you who Edwin Moses is, and maybe even Iowa State’s Danny Harris who ended Moses’ 122-race win streak which lasted almost 10 years. Harris’ name is still on the record board at the Cyclones’ track.
- The pole vault hauled in 16% not just for injury risk if things go wrong, but also because no other event sees the combination of speed and upper body strength required here.
- Congrats to whatever event/events brought in the 1% of votes. The steeplechase maybe?
