Rutgers football has landed its first commitment of the 2026 transfer portal as defensive back Zahmir Dawud from Villanova has decided to make the jump to the Power Five level by making the short trip
up I-95.
Coming out of North Brunswick High School as a part of the 2023 class, the 6-foot, 185-pound cornerback would redshirt his first season with the Wildcats before becoming a rotational piece in 2024. He appeared in 14 games that year and made four starts.
In 2025, Dawud cemented himself as the full-time starter and earned all CAA Second Team honors that season. He finished the season with 44 total tackles, 11 passes defended, and two interceptions. He recorded two total tackles during Villanova’s loss against Penn State last season. He joins the Scarlet Knights with two years of eligibility remaining.
Dawud came to campus on Friday, right when the portal opened, and announced his commitment to Rutgers Sunday morning. The visit went well, and Dawud stated that he was drawn to the culture that had been built at Rutgers.
“The visit went very well, and what stood out most, for sure, is the culture and the standard coach sets not only for the players but for himself. Also, the money is put into keeping players healthy. Recovery is a big thing.”
He also stated that he was happy to come to Rutgers because it is so close to his home.
Several other power schools had interest in Dawud, including Cincinnati, Minnesota, and UCLA.
Due to Bo Mascoe and Jacobie Henderson entering the portal, and Cam Miller running out of eligibility, Rutgers will need to grab a few more corners in the transfer portal to complete their defense; however, the defensive rebuild is starting to get underway.
