Now that the World Cup is over and the Spanish have once again reclaimed their perch atop the global football throne, we fully and officially direct our attention to the transfer market. Thanks to last season’s surprising performance, Roma ended their years-long Champions League drought, erasing almost a decade of Europa League ignominy thanks to a surprising third-place finish.
Theoretically, returning to Europe’s elite club competition and the revenue it brings should have greased the wheels for
Roma’s transfer ambitions. But here we are in late July, and the club has yet to sign a single player. Part of that can be attributed to the calcifying effect of the World Cup, but the opportunity cost of their pursuit of Mason Greenwood, not to mention the delay in hiring new Sporting Director Tony D’Amico, certainly didn’t help matters.
However, now that all of that is in the rearview mirror, Roma’s priorities are clear: They retained Paulo Dybala, seem to be warming up to the idea of keeping Matías Soulé, and they’re going all in on Crysencio Summerville for the vacant left-wing spot. Assuming they can land the plane on that deal, they’ll need another wide player to essentially take Stephan El Shaarawy’s minutes from last season.
Given the financial commitment they’re prepared to make for Summerville (north of €50 million), Roma is scouring the bargain bin for a versatile winger to spell Summerville, Dybala and Soulé. According to Leggo, Roma has identified PSG’s Ibrahim Mbaye as the man for the job and may attempt to acquire the 18-year-old forward on loan.
Whether it’s Mbaye or Real Madrid’s über prospect Endrick, Roma seems keen on filling out their roster with at least one high-upside loan candidate.
