It’s an off day for the Tigers today as they get ready to invite the White Sox to town. In the meantime, there’s a lot of Tigers pitching chatter. There’s a question of whether Tarik Skubal can go back-to-back seasons as a Cy Young winner, while a more pressing concern is whether or not Kyle Finnegan will be okay after leaving Wednesday afternoon’s game with discomfort.
In general MLB news there are some season-ending injuries that will impact the Red Sox and Brewers. Plus: how many ways did the Rockies
lose their games this year, and a look at the longest postseason droughts in baseball.
Let’s get right into it.
Detroit Tigers News
- MLB dot com looked at the Cy Young frontrunners, and questions whethere there was anyone who could catch up to them. Of likely repeat winner Tarik Skubal, they said:
Skubal seems all but guaranteed to win his second straight AL Cy Young Award. For good reason, too. Through Monday, the lefty was 12-4 with an AL-best 2.18 ERA and 11.2 K/9 ratio, and an MLB-best 216 strikeouts. He also led all AL pitchers with a 6.2 bWAR and his 0.87 WHIP was the best in the bigs. These numbers are also why he’s in the running for a second straight pitching Triple Crown (leading in wins, ERA and strikeouts), and why he did so well in this vote. But the race is still notable because of a certain lefty in Boston.
- During his bullpen warm-up session, Kyle Finnegan abruptly left the bullpen. An update on his condition was provided about an inning later.
- We wish Chris Paddack and his family the best as he goes on the bereavement list.
