John Stones is leaving Manchester City this summer after spending 10 seasons there and there have been a bevy of rumors as to what’s next for the center-back. He’s been linked with a potential move to Bayern Munich as a free agent as the German Rekordmeister are keeping their eyes open to defensive reinforcements despite their top transfer targets being Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon and Hertha Berlin’s Kennet Eichhorn.
Ahead of Bayern’s DFB-Pokal final vs. VfB Stuttgart in Berlin, board member
for sport Max Eberl threw cold water on the rumors linking Stones with a potential move to Munich. “That’s not true,” Eberl affirmed when he was asked about the center back, according to Sport Bild’s Christian Falk (via @iMiaSanMia). While he would be a free transfer for Bayern and bring vast experience to their squad, it’s not something Vincent Kompany or the rest of the club are considering right now.
It was earlier this month that reports started to recirculate linking Stones with a potential reunion with Kompany at Bayern after there were previously loose links. It’s been known at Bayern that they will be keeping their eyes open to defensive targets despite it not being their top priority. While Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah are essentially the nailed on starters for Bayern, the future of Kim Min-jae is still uncertain and Hiroki Ito is also a candidate for sale this summer.
To go the distance across all fronts, depth is certainly required so if Min-jae and Ito are both sold this summer, Bayern would definitely have to bring in at least one center back to fill the void, though it looks like it won’t be Stones, without any discredit to the 31-year-old. He’s a well-decorated winner with City and was just selected to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the Worl Cup even though he’s only played a full 90 minutes a small handful of times due to dealing with a thigh problem most of the season.
