Landon Koenig was born in Page, North Dakota, a city of 190 in the southwestern portion of the state as per the 2020 census. He attended May-Port High School, an institution servicing the combined cities of Mayville and Portland, beginning in seventh grade and as such, has the distinction of being a six-time letterman, playing baseball, football, and basketball. On the diamond, he posted a cumulative 1.79 ERA in 95.2 innings, striking out 168 total batters, earning him All-Region honors four times
and All-State honors twice. While many scouts and evaluators considered him one of the best, if not the best, players in North Dakota available in the 2023 MLB Draft, he had much less prominence nationally, and as such, went undrafted. He had a commitment to North Dakota State University and made it to campus that fall.
In 2024, Koenig’s freshman season, the right-hander appeared in 14 games for the Bison, starting all of them as the team’s Sunday starter. In 59.2 innings, he posted a 7.54 ERA, allowing 86 hits, walking 25, and striking out 41. In 2025, head coach Oakes had him pitch exclusively out of the bullen, and the results were more of the same. Appearing in 19 games, Koenig posted a 6.17 ERA in 46.2 innings, allowing 57 hits, walking 18, and striking out 46.
That summer, the right-hander entered the NCAA transfer portal and transferred to the University of Mississippi. The right-hander was used out of the Ole Miss bullpen and appeared in 17 games for the Rebels, posting a 6.35 ERA in 22.2 innings, allowing 35 hits, walking 7, and striking out 33.
The 6’6”, 245-right hander throws from a three-quarters arm slot. A strike-thrower mechanical changes made at Ole Miss that included slowing his delivery down and being more deliberate when coming set helped Koenig cut down on his walk rate even further. He does not always command his pitches the best, but he pounds the zone.
At North Dakota, Koenig’s fastball sat in the low-to-mid-90 and reportedly topped out at 97 MPH, but head coach Mike Bianco and the coaching staff at Ole Miss helped the right-hander unlock a bit more velocity from his fastball by having him push off the mound further and increase his extension, and the pitch comfortably sat in the mid-90s in 2026, reportedly topping out as high as 98 MPH. Despite the above-average velocity, the pitch is not a high strikeout offering. Instead, it sets up his secondary pitches.
The right-hander complements the pitch with a high-80s slider and a high-80s splitter. Like his fastball, the coaching staff at Ole Miss helped Koenig unlock a little more velocity in his slider. The pitch features gyroscopic break and has late bite to it. His splitter comes out of his hand well and he does not telegraph the pitch, but features more gradient drop than sudden, sharp drop.
Koenig possessed mostly favorable batted ball data in 2026, posting a 43.3% groundball rate, 26.9% line drive rate, and 29.9% flyball rate, but had problems with his HR/FB rate; allowing 4 homers, he had a 20% HR/FB ratio. Because the right-hander pounds the zone and his fastball does not possess dynamic, bat-missing traits, he needs to work on pitch placement or be victimized by hitters.
