Paul Wanner left Bayern Munich looking for the regular playing time and development opportunities that were difficult to guarantee in a star-studded squad. Now, the question is whether the club should consider bringing its former prodigy back into the fold.
Wanner remains one of the more intriguing young talents to come through Bayern Munich’s system in recent years. The youngster possesses the technical ability, creativity, and versatility to operate in several roles, while his experience away from
the Allianz Arena has given him an opportunity to develop in a way that would not have been possible sitting on the bench in Munich.
That experience could make a potential return more interesting than simply bringing back a promising academy player. Wanner would theoretically arrive with greater maturity and a better understanding of what is required at the senior level. He also could arrive more versatile, as his role has shifted from attacking midfielder to central midfielder for PSV Eindhoven.
Bayern Munich also has to consider its long-term planning. The club has already demonstrated a willingness to give young players opportunities, with Lennart Karl emerging as one of the most exciting prospects around the first team. Tom Bischof has also become part of Vincent Kompany’s squad planning. Adding Wanner back into that mix could give the coach another technically gifted option.
Of course, a return would only make sense if there is a genuine pathway to meaningful minutes. Wanner does not need another season of being a peripheral figure. If Bayern Munich believes he has developed enough to compete for a first-team role, bringing him home could be an intriguing move. The Bavarians are als rumored to hold a buyback clause on Wanner, which adds another element to this scenario.
The prodigal son returning to Munich would make for a great story. The bigger question is whether Wanner can return as a genuine contributor rather than simply a former academy star.
