A few notable members of the Los Angeles Rams have new jersey numbers. It will take some getting used to when LA takes the field for the first time of the regular season on Sunday versus the Houston Texans.
Puka Nacua, WR
17 —> 12
Nacua gave up the number 17 when the Rams signed Davante Adams in free agency. He wore 12 in college during his time at BYU, so this signals a shift back towards his roots.
It may take some times for eyes to adjust to Nacua in his new number. We did not see him in the preseason. He’s still easily
recognizable with his large frame and long hair. If you see someone running over a corner, it’s probably Nacua.
Jarquez Hunter, RB
35 —> 27
35 is a brutal number for a running back, though it does fit Hunter’s physical running style. 27 suits the rookie better.
Tre Mason and Darrell Henderson both wore 27 during their time with the Rams. Hopefully Hunter has a better career with the team than those two.
Josaiah Stewart, EDGE
41 —> 10
Stewart will don Cooper Kupp’s old number when he makes his NFL debut this weekend. He wore 41 in the preseason. The number change will pair nicely with Byron Young, 0, and Jared Verse, 8.
Jersey numbers for some newcomers
Davante Adams, WR: 17
Interestingly enough, Adams did not have to pay Nacua to take over number 17.
Terrance Ferguson, TE: 18
Similar to his fellow rookie in Stewart, Ferguson will also wear one of Kupp’s former numbers in 18. It’s fitting because he will likely take over some of Kupp’s duties on offense, such as blocking in the run and pass game and as a vertical slot threat. It remains to be seen how much of a role Ferguson has early in the season, though his arrival may signal a heavier utilization of 12 personnel.
Nate Landman, MLB: 53
Get used to seeing a lot of Nate Landman. He’s LA’s “green dot guy” for the upcoming season, meaning he will call defensive signals and help get everyone aligned. He’s earned the starting off-ball linebacker job and has a knack for knocking the ball loose. Landman sat out all of the preseason, so Sunday will be the first time we see him in 53 and royal and sol.
Poona Ford, DT: 95
Ford was the Rams’ biggest free agent addition on the defense. He’ll play an important part in improving the run defense from last season. He also can collapse the pocket as a rusher.
