The Guardians have traded Matt Wilkinson and the 29th compensatory pick in the 2026 MLB draft to the San Francisco Giants for Patrick Bailey, 26 year old switch-hitting catcher.
We will have an analysis piece up on Bailey momentarily, but Bo Naylor has been optioned to Columbus. With Bo, Cooper Ingle and Kody Huff, the team has a bit of a logjam at catcher there, so I wonder if one of them might be looking at a position change. Bailey is under team control through 2029.
I suspect this trade answers
the question of how the team views Bo Naylor’s pitch-calling and defense. It was not enough, especially given that he could not get to his underlying metrics as a hitter. They have opted to create, instead, the best catching tandem in baseball, defensively. We will see how that goes!
