Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton met with the media today at the NFL Scouting Combine and dropped a bit of a bombshell. He confirmed to reporters that offensive coordinator Davis Webb will indeed call plays for the Denver Broncos this upcoming season.
This has been rumored ever since the Broncos promoted Davis Webb to offensive coordinator, replacing Joe Lombardi, who was fired earlier in the offseason.
Webb was a highly sought-after coaching candidate who had multiple head coaching interviews and was reportedly a finalist for the Las Vegas Raiders head coaching job. In the end, Webb would remove himself from consideration for that job as they appeared to have their eyes set on Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. In the end, the Raiders would end up hiring Kubiak as their head coach, and while Webb had offensive coordinator interest from around the league, he decided to return to the Broncos.
Webb has seen himself rise quickly through the coaching ranks. He retired from the NFL and was immediately hired by Sean Payton to be the Broncos’ quarterbacks coach. His work with rookie quarterback Bo Nix earned him the title of offensive pass game coordinator/quarterbacks coach last season, and now, he is the Denver Broncos offensive coordinator and play caller. He has accomplished all of this and is just 31 years old.
Payton told reporters that Webb has a “gift” and added that he was already moving toward giving up playcalling duties midseason this past season. He said that he would only give up play-calling duties if he could give it to someone he trusts to do it, and it is clear that he fully trusts Davis Webb. Now, Payton will be heavily involved still and did add that he will call “some plays” still, but that Webb is going to be calling the vast majority of plays this upcoming season.
We’ll see the overall impact of this change, but it should add some excitement to the Broncos’ offense moving forward. Webb is fresh, new, lots of hype, and hopefully, brings some new ideas and strategies to the offense. He already has a great relationship with quarterback Bo Nix, and hopefully, the two can continue to grow and have an even better 2026 season.
