Every World Cup seems to produce a handful of players who become impossible to ignore.
For a few weeks, it feels like they’re everywhere. They’re scoring goals, creating chances, winning matches, and finding their way into every conversation surrounding the tournament.
Juventus players have certainly had their share of those performances over the years.
Which raises an interesting question: what actually makes a World Cup performance great?
Is it the player who reaches the highest level? The player who helps
carry his country the furthest? The player who exceeds expectations the most? Or simply the player who dominates the tournament from start to finish?
I don’t think those are necessarily the same thing.
A player can produce the best football of the tournament without winning it. Another can become inseparable from a championship run. A third can arrive with relatively little fanfare and leave as one of the biggest stories of the competition.
