Newcastle United has spent much of the summer assessing potential additions to its team, with Matthias Jaissle inheriting a forward line that struggled to score consistently last season.
With less than two weeks remaining before the transfer window closes, Atletico Madrid striker Alexander Sorloth has continued to be linked with the Magpies.
Earlier in the transfer window, reports indicated Atletico Madrid could listen to proposals despite initially considering the striker not for sale. The situation
has now taken a twist following a recent injury setback for the Norway international.
Sporten’s Michael Breines Oredam reported on Saturday that Newcastle has put Sorloth “once again” on its summer shortlist and remains interested in signing the 30-year-old before the Sept. 1 deadline.
“Newcastle, who are undergoing major upheaval after heavy player sales and the appointment of a new manager in Matthias Jaissle, have once again put Alexander Sorloth on their summer lists,” Sporten reported.
The renewed interest comes despite Sorloth suffering an injury that will rule him out of Atletico’s La Liga opener against Villarreal on Sunday, just under a week before the transfer window ends. According to Sporten, however, the striker is expected to recover before Newcastle runs out of time to complete a transfer.
“The signals from Wanda Metropolitano are that he will be back in full training before the summer window in the Premier League closes on September 1st,” Sporten reported.
All of that said, Atletico is not actively pushing Sorloth out, but the report indicated the Spanish club could reconsider its position if the right bid arrives.
“Atletico Madrid are set to keep Alexander Sorloth, but may be willing to listen to offers over 40 million euros,” Sporten reported.
That would put the asking price above €40 million (£34.5 million), broadly matching earlier reporting from Tuttomercatoweb that Atletico could entertain a sale for approximately that figure, and more than doubling his market value of €18 million.
Newcastle could also face competition from Juventus, which pursued Sorloth before the World Cup. Sporten reported the Italian club had previously reached a personal agreement with the striker, but the Serie A giants simply couldn’t afford to pay Atletico’s asking price.
Sorloth scored 13 La Liga goals in 35 LaLiga appearances last season after hitting 20 during his first campaign with Atletico.
