Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington was fined $14, 926 by the NFL. Washington’s touchdown celebration was said to be a “vulgar act.” To put it as Tom Pelissero did, Washington showed off the “size of his footballs” after scoring vs. New Orleans.
Additionally, wide
receiver Brandon Smith has been fined $4,916 for the use of his helmet on a play in which he also received a personal foul penalty. The incident occurred during the first quarter after a Steelers running play, when Smith got into the face of Saints cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. The officials flagged Smith for his actions, and the NFL has now added a financial penalty following its review of the play.
Smith’s fine comes as part of the league’s ongoing efforts to enforce player safety rules, particularly those involving unnecessary contact and the use of the helmet.
