As WBA bantamweight titleholder Antonio Vargas prepares for his weekend fight against Bam Rodriguez, Matchroom takes fans behind the scenes of his training camp as he physically readies himself to go against one of the very best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport. Vargas knows a win here can dramatically change his life, so is taking no shortcuts in training as we start with lots of hill sprints and inclined running.
“I look at the [hill] sprints as this is the 11th and 12th round and I got to
dig deep,” Vargas said. “Sometimes if you don’t win those two rounds you don’t secure the fight, so trying to finish hard and give it my all because in the ring you never know what could happen. So I always want to put myself in the worst case scenario, challenge myself, and be able to adapt to anything that comes my way.”
Later in the day Vargas heads to the gym to get in some boxing work as he hones the tools he’ll need to utilize on fight night, fully aware of the task at hand against an elite talent.
“This is definitely the biggest fight of my career, biggest platform as well. I think he’s ranked #4 pound-for-pound so definitely one of the biggest names to now so motivates me to train hard show the world who I am.”
