The Mariners still hold a playoff spot, but that could change tonight.
The Mariners will try to fend off a third straight series loss on Saturday in Atlanta. For as bad as things have been lately, they still hold on to the third wild card position. But with the Astros and Ranger squaring off Saturday in Arlington, the Mariners could end the day out of a playoff spot for the first time in months.
Victor Robles returns from suspension and starts in right field. Leo Rivas starts at second base; he is
a 3-for-4 with a walk, double and homer since being recalled, raising his wRC+ to 148 on the season. Josh Naylor starts after missing Friday’s game. And Jorge Polanco starts at DH, just five plate appearances short of 450 — a threshold that would trigger a player option in his contract.
On the mound for the Mariners tonight is Bryce Miller. His last start in Cleveland was decent — six innings, two runs, two hits, one walk. Perhaps it’s a sign he’s figured something out in what’s been an otherwise disastrous season.
