Former two-division champion Danny Garcia will make good on his threat to return to the ring, announcing an October 18th farewell bout against Daniel Gonzalez at his longtime stomping grounds of Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
Garcia (37-4, 21 KO) was the top super lightweight of the early ‘10s and a prominent figure in the welterweight shark tank of the decade’s final stretch, but has not turned in a standout performance since battering veteran tough guy Adrian Granados in 2019. He’s fought just three
times in nearly five years, a clear decision over the badly shopworn Jose Benavidez Jr sandwiched between a decision loss to Errol Spence Jr and, most recently, a career-first stoppage defeat to Erislandy Lara last September.
Now 37, “Swift” will look to squeeze out one more win at Barclays, where he’s scored seven victories in nine appearances dating back to 2012.
“The fans have supported me the whole way since I first fought here and have made Brooklyn feel like my home outside of Philly,” said Garcia. “There’s nothing like a big fight night at Barclays Center. I had to do this show for the fans and show them how much I’ve appreciated them this entire time. The best way to say goodbye is by fighting here one last time and giving them a tremendous night of boxing full of rising young talent. It’s gonna be the DSG show in Brooklyn once again on October 18!”
Queens’ Gonzalez (22-4-1, 7 KO) has no major victories but a couple of semi-noteworthy losses, dropping a UD to Chris Algieri in 2019 and a majority decision to Petros Ananyan two years later. After sitting out all of 2023, he took home a pair of club-level victories, including his first 10-round decision since 2019.
“I’ve been grinding in silence, locked in that gym and waiting on my shot,” said Gonzalez. “Now it’s here. I’m stepping into the ring with a future Hall of Famer in Danny Garcia at Barclays Center. I ain’t coming to just show up, I’m coming to shock the world and prove how great I am. Life’s about timing, and on October 18, it’s ‘Gallo’ time.”
Undefeated up-and-comers dot the undercard, most notably Top Rank heavyweight Damian Knyba.
