The Arizona Cardinals are preparing to trade wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., per multiple reports. ESPN’s Adam Schefterhad the report first, and it’s been corroborated from multiple sources since his initial report.
As so often happens when a big name is on the trading block or suddenly becomes a free agent, we need to ask ourselves: Should the New York Giants be involved?
In this case, should the Giants trade for Marvin Harrison Jr.?
The current reporting is that the Houston Texans are the leading
candidate for Harrison Jr., as they attempt to salvage their season following a surprising 0-4 start. However, Jordan Schultz is reporting that multiple other teams are engaged in talks with the Cardinals and at least one believes that he’s worth Day 2 compensation.
Schefter hinted on the Pat McAfee show earlier in the week that the Giants have had some level of interest in Harrison Jr.
Do the New York Giants need help at wide receiver? There’s a strong argument that they do need additional help at wide receiver, considering they only have three pure wide receivers on their roster right now.
The Giants current receiving depth chart looks like this:
Wide receivers
- Malik Nabers
- Darnell Mooney
- Malachi Fields (r)
Returner/receiver
- Charlie Jones
Practice squad
- Jalin Hyatt
- Dalen Cambre
- Dontae Flemming
Considerations about how the Giants want to operate their offense aside, the team’s depth chart is razor thin, and they’re one injury away from a crisis situation. Likewise there’s also a good question as to whether a receiver-light roster is even the best way to support quarterback Jameis Winston. Winston wants to attack downfield, and wide receivers are just better at that than tight ends. We’ve also seen a decline in the Giants’ rushing attack with the current roster composition since the injury to Jaxson Dart.
But is trading potentially significant draft capital for Marvin Harrison Jr. the answer?
