Newcastle United’s summer rebuild has already raised concern among supporters, with Anthony Gordon gone and both Bruno and Sandro Tonali expected to follow if the club receives major offers for them.
On the incoming side, however, things have been suspect as only one player—a backup goalie, no less—has arrived in Tyneside since the transfer window opened more than two weeks ago.
We might now know why, following Tuesday’s unexpected news coming from the governing football body UEFA.
According to The
Athletic’s Chris Waugh, Newcastle have been fined a combined €6million by UEFA after breaching Financial Sustainability Regulations.
With that, the club also entered into a three-year settlement agreement after exceeding UEFA’s football earnings threshold and 70 percent squad-cost ratio.
“Newcastle United has entered into a settlement agreement with UEFA following a breach of its Financial Sustainability Regulations,” Newcastle wrote in an official statement shared after the fine emerged.
Newcastle will pay €3million for overspending against UEFA’s football earnings threshold, with a further €7million suspended pending future compliance. UEFA also fined the club another €3million for breaching its squad-cost ratio target in 2025.
According to Waugh, the penalties and regulations are “undoubtedly significantly affecting” Newcastle’s transfer approach this summer, although the club keeps saying they will still sign players.
The sale of Gordon to Barcelona was described by Waugh as close to a necessity to help with compliance for the previous campaign, even though NUFC never linked it to that matter.
Newcastle, meanwhile, maintain they do not have to sell Bruno nor Tonali for financial reasons, which might be true if looking at PIF’s pockets out of context, but Waugh reported the Magpies board are aware that a sizeable fee would allow them to reinvest more widely and within the constraints they keep failing to abide by.
As per the original rebuild plan, Howe still wants a starting goalkeeper, at least one full-back, two midfielders if Tonali, Bruno and Joe Willock leave, and at least one attacker to replace Gordon.
When there’s smoke, there usually is fire, and this window is starting to generate serious concern about whether the plans sold to fans by PIF are really going to materialize at some point, or if it was a mirage.
