The Buffalo Bills will be looking for another fullback and core special teams leader after losing fullback Reggie Gilliam to free agency. It will create quite the significant void with both special teams versatility and locker room leadership.
A fan favorite in Buffalo, Gilliam, affectionately known as Sledge, departs after carving out a unique role as a dependable fullback, special teams captain, and occasional tight end. His value often extended beyond the stat sheet, serving as one of the team’s
most trusted special teams contributors and handling lead blocking duties for running back James Cook III.
What will hurt Bills fans more is Gilliam signed within the division. He’s set to join the New England Patriots on a three-year deal worth up to $12 million, including $4.4 million in the first year of the deal, and $6 million guaranteed overall.
For Buffalo, replacing Gilliam may not simply mean finding another traditional fullback. It likely means identifying a player who can contribute across multiple phases. Whether that comes through free agency, the draft, or an internal shift on offense remains to be seen. Gilliam’s departure will be felt now that his tenure with One Bills Drive is over.
