Jack Catterall
talks to iFL TV about his position as the WBA ‘regular’ champion and being in the mandatory position to contend for the ‘super’ world title strap currently held by Teofimo Lopez. While Teofimo has his sights set on much more lucrative fights, Catterall says he fully intends to pursue his mandatory title shot as he’s earned his way to getting his opportunity. “We had a great time in Egypt. Finally got my piece of the puzzle which is the WBA
regular world title. Unbelievable fight, great fighter in Shakhram Giyasov. Nobody wanted to fight him, he was mandatory for Rolando’s title for over two years…We agreed to fight, I beat him for the world title and we move on now.
“In that time they’ve given Rolly 180 days to defend his title against the winner of my fight with Shakhram, in that time frame he took a fight with Teofimo Lopez so now we find ourselves chasing Teo.”
On Teofimo not being particulary inclined to fight him
“I understand Teo wants to fight Ryan Garcia, wants to fight Devin Haney — that’s fine. But Teo’s been the one that’s been the advocate for ‘let’s make boxing great again’. Let’s apply these mandatories, let’s play by the rule book, let’s now swerve them. So we’re mandatory for his title and that’s where we stand.
“I’ve been speaking to [my manager], I’ve been speaking to Matchroom, they’re in contact with the WBA. I believe it gets ordered soon and it’s to Teo: does he want to fight, does he want to vacate? We’ll see…I believe he’ll take the fight.”
