Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NBA. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Lakers fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.
Believe it or not, there are only a handful of games left in this NBA season. That means we are in the final stretch before voting for the end-of-season awards begins.
While LeBron James and Austin Reaves will be ineligible since they didn’t reach the 65-game requirement needed to
be considered, Luka Dončić is still on pace to be up for awards.
Considering his outstanding play, he should be a shoo-in for All-NBA, but he’s been so good that his name has begun to get thrown into MVP debates.
So, for our SB Nation Reacts survey this week, we asked if Luka should be part of the MVP conversation and where he should finish once voting is complete.
The results are in, and a whopping 96% of fans believe he should be in the MVP conversation.
It’s hard to get 96% of people to agree on anything. But Dončić has been so good that this number, while big, is not surprising.
Luka has been an offensive monster this season. He’s leading the NBA in scoring, averaging 33.6 points per game. He’s had huge performances, like his 60-point game against the Heat.
As the leader of the Lakers, he’s gotten them to the third seed in the West, proving that his play is valuable and capable of dominating in a very competitive conference.
He might not ultimately win the MVP, but he has to be considered.
While Luka being part of the group of players up for the award is not surprising, seeing 56% of fans thinking he will win certainly is interesting.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Victor Wembanyama are also top choices, and considering that SGA has won it before, and Wemby plays for a team with a better record than the Lakers, you’d think fans would factor that in, and fewer would take him as the winner.
That’s what 22% of fans did as they voted for Luka to come in second in the MVP race.
While there aren’t many games left, a strong finish for Luka here could make things interesting. The best he’s ever finished in MVP voting is third back in 2024, so there’s a chance he could either win his first MVP or place higher than he ever has for the award.
