The Ring reports and multiple outlets confirm that former undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is set to undergo elbow surgery after this month’s unanimous decision loss to Terence
Crawford, delaying a planned February return until at least the second quarter of next year.
Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KO) suffered just his second loss of the past decade on the 13th when the faster, busier “Bud” boxed his way to a clear victory in Vegas. He still has two fights on his blockbuster deal with Turki Alalshikj’s Riyadh Season, which began with last May’s excruciatingly dull victory over William Scull, but time will tell if he can reach fight number three before his 36th birthday next July.
It’s bad news for Alvarez and fans hoping to see him squeeze as many more fights out of his dwindling prime as possible, but on the bright side, at least this means they won’t try and foist an immediate rematch on us.
