Newcastle United are preparing to open talks with Bruno Guimaraes over a new contract amid persistent interest from Manchester City.
Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke revealed Newcastle’s plans for Bruno
and his future in Tyneside.
“Newcastle had a lot to focus on in the summer with the Alexander Isak transfer saga, and they don’t want to lose any more of their star players,” O’Rourke said. “As I said, Guimaraes seems like he’s happy at Newcastle. We know that Newcastle are very happy with him. I would imagine there’ll be discussions potentially to be held over a new contract to see if they can keep him on Tyneside as well, but a lot will depend on how Newcastle are doing and performing. If they’re competing in the Champions League, I don’t see any reason why Guimaraes would push for a move away.”
According to O’Rourke, Newcastle rebuffed approaches from Manchester City during the summer and have “no plans to let him go.”
The Brazil international, who joined from Lyon in 2022 and thus became one of first faces of Newcastle’s PIF era, is under contract until 2028, but the Magpies are eager to strengthen their stance by rewarding him for his performances and loyalty.
O’Rourke noted that Newcastle are determined to avoid a repeat of the ridiculous Isak-to-Liverpool saga.
“The Magpies are now determined to avoid a similar situation,” O’Rourke reported. “Howe plans to keep his star players at St James’ Park for the foreseeable future, despite constant interest in the likes of Bruno Guimaraes.”
Despite the midfielder recently declaring himself a Geordie, Manchester City’s admiration has not faded. Pep Guardiola is understood to be a long-term admirer, with Football Insider previously reporting that Guimaraes is viewed at the Etihad as a top target.
For now, Newcastle hope that renewed terms will secure the player’s future and reinforce their ambition to build around him in the years ahead, but that will entirely depend on what the Magpies can or can’t do inside the football pitch.
