Duke Basketball released video of the team photo session on Friday,
and it has caused quite a stir – understandably.When you see this video of the photo session, one thing is immediately obvious: Duke is a huge team, but he looks kind of small here.
The back row features Maxime Meyer (#15), Cameron Williams (#14), Ngongba, Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje (#30) and Drew Scharnowski (#8).
Only Scharnowski, listed at 6-10, appears shorter than Ngongba.
Williams, listed at 7-0, Meyer, listed at 7-1, and Boumtje
Boumtje, listed at 7-2, appear visibly taller than Ngongba.
The most intriguing player there is Boumtje Boumtje.
When he committed to Duke in the spring, Boumtje Boumtje caused a big stir, which got even bigger when he excelled in the FIBA U17 World Cup in Istanbul.
Although Boumtje Boumtje was listed at 7-2 on Duke’s roster, a lot of schools boost height on a roster, and when Boumtje Boumtje committed, he was listed at 7-0.
Given his already impressive skills and athleticism, it’s crazy that the guy is now 7-2, and crazier still that Ngongba looks like the kid brother in a family picture.
In a related note, which sounds like good news for Duke fans, Duke coach Jon Scheyer told CBS’s Jon Rothstein this:
“For me, at the end of the day, I’m right where I want to be. As a coach, I don’t care if you’re a coach or a player, the NBA is the highest level you can possibly do something. For me, I got my dream job at 33. Coaching at Duke, that’s coaching where I played, that’s where my family is, and that’s where I grew up. For me, I’m 100% in the right place.
“I’m committed to Duke for the long haul, man. This is where I want to be. I want to continue to build something special, and we’ve got a lot more to do here. For me, it was a great thing to think about. But at the end of the day, there’s no question that I’m in the right spot.
“Maybe, maybe not. For me, I’m not even saying this because this is an interview we’re doing, but I don’t think about it. I think about one thing. I’m obsessed with how we can get better as a team and take the final next step I want us to take. For me, if you told me I could be here for my whole career and have great success, sign me up right now. I don’t feel like I have something to prove, other than ‘how can I be the best coach for Duke?’ I love where I’m at. I absolutely love it.”
Duke fans are unbelievably lucky.
