Manuel Neuer visited his old club Schalke last weekend, and he was welcomed by a chorus of boos from the home crowd. Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen opined that the heckling was unnecessary and subtly suggested that Schalke wasn’t a club where Neuer would have the career he would have otherwise had at Bayern.
“I think that’s unnecessary after 15 years,” Dreesen said in an interview with Sport1 (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “Manuel has played so many fantastic games for this country.
I don’t think he would ever have had the career he’s had if he had stayed at Schalke. And I think it’s perfectly normal for a goalkeeper like him to make a different decision at some point.”
The Rekordmeister played out a 0-0 draw with Schalke on a day where the Bavarians struggled to make their chances count, thus settling for a point. Neuer played for the Royal Blues before switching to Bayern in 2011.
