Between start times for the two basketball games landing just 30 minutes apart and one game being a part of my season ticket package and one going in the books as a road game, I wasn’t able to attend or even
watch any of Marquette women’s basketball’s 75-43 victory over Milwaukee on Wednesday night.
Seems like I really didn’t need to?
By the time I pulled up the live stats inside Fiserv Forum, Marquette was up 24-11 on the Panthers. That was after a 13-4 start in the first quarter, and as it turns out, I had loaded up the stats right after a pair of Payton Rechlicz free throws, so Marquette had just been up 24-9 thanks to a 9-0 run to start the second quarter. A 9-2 stretch over the final three minutes of the half put MU up 38-23 at halftime, and juuuuuust to make sure that things were over, MU won the third quarter 22-5.
Jaidynn Mason had a free throw to get the margin to 30 for the first time with 1:23 left in the third quarter, and it was 60-28 going to the fourth. Things played out even at 15 each in the final 10 minutes, although Marquette did get to their largest margin of the game at 34 points in the final two minutes thanks to a bucket from Charia Smith.
The kind of wild part about this? Marquette won big with essentially nothing from Skylar Forbes. Five points on 2-for-10 shooting including 1-for-7 from three-point land where she hit her second attempt of the game and missed the rest, four rebounds, two assists, and four fouls in 21 minutes. GOOD NEWS: I said I would like to see her turn it over less than four times, and she did, just two here out of Marquette’s 12 in the game. If you did watch the game on ESPN+, then let me know if I’m overstating Forbes’ lack of impact on this game.
Halle Vice had a big impact on this game, putting up 23 points on 9-for-11 shooting and adding five rebounds, two assists, and a block. Lee Volker had a double-double on 14 points and 10 rebounds, and she filled in around that with two assists, two blocks, and two steals.
Two small notes about things that happened here, one definitely better news than the other. The first and lesser thing is that Kam Herring got her first career bucket, sinking a three with 2:31 left to play to push the margin up over 30 for good. The second and much bigger thing is that Kennedi Perkins checked in with 4:55 left in the first quarter. That’s her first action since leaving the Wisconsin game on a stretcher, and she finished with 11 minutes played here. She missed all three shots she took and committed two turnovers, so it’s not all perfect news. Still, it’s great news that Perkins is back in action already.

Up Next: Time off! Marquette can’t play at the McGuire Center this weekend because of the Big East volleyball tournament, and apparently head coach Cara Consuegra either A) couldn’t find a road game that she liked or B) didn’t want to play another road game in between now and and the Coconut Hoops game against Iowa State on Friday, November 28. Tipoff on that one down in For Myers, Florida, is set for 10am Central time, and FloSports will have the streaming broadcast. The Cyclones are currently 5-0, but they’ll visit Drake and host Mercyhurst between now and the 28th. Our old friend Kenzie Hare is starting, playing 18 minutes a night, and shooting 46% from behind the three-point line.
