On the latest episode of Notsam Wrestling podcast , CM Punk pushed back on the narrative that he was trolling Kevin Nash during a recent spot that went viral.
The spot in question occurred at a WWE house show in December. Fan footage uploaded onto social media shows that during a match against Bronson Reed, Punk dramatically removed his T-shirt while swiveling his hips à la Ravishing Rick Rude, only to reveal another T-shirt underneath.
The moment was widely interpreted by fans as a reaction to comments
made by Kevin Nash. On his Kliq This podcast, the WWE Hall of Famer had recently criticized Punk for covering up his torso during a match on Raw.
“If you’re the Heavyweight Champion of the WWE and you wrestle in a T-shirt — ouch,” Nash said at the time.
Big Daddy Cool also addressed Punk’s T-shirt spot with Reed in a later episode of Kliq This, remarking: “Wouldn’t it be easier to just go to the gym?”
During the Notsam Wrestling Live! interview, neither host Sam Roberts nor Punk mentioned Nash by name, but they referenced his issues with Punk when Roberts brought up seeing The Second City Saint at live events “doing jokes about wrestling in T-shirts.”
According to Punk, the house show stunt that went viral was only done to make Reed laugh.
“Yeah, and it’s not that deep. That was to pop the guy I was wrestling,” Punk said. “Doesn’t go any deeper than that. But, you know, somebody’s always gotta throw their two cents in and, ‘No, no, no, what he was doing was…’”
He continued, “No, no, no. I made [the] dude laugh, and that’s what house shows are for. I’m like king of ribs on house shows. Last year at [Madison Square] Garden, I’m running out in a towel, soaking wet with a shower cap on. Come on.”
Roberts noted that Punk was trying to have fun in such moments, and the World Heavyweight Champion agreed.
“Some people really wanna be miserable though,” Punk added. “I’m trying not to be. I’m really, really trying.”
