There is a strong chance Michael Mayer may be entering his final season with the Las Vegas Raiders.
The tight end, who the Raiders traded up to draft in 2023, is set to be a free agent after this season. In a post exploring whether he will return or not, we asked our readers if they think Mayer will leave the Raiders in free agency in 2027. The vote was close, but most of the voters do think he will be leaving.
I tend to agree even though there is a lot still to be determined.
The Raiders unexpectedly
drafted fellow tight end Brock Bowers in the first round a year after Mayer was drafted and Bowers is already an elite player. Yes, the Raiders will use both players together, but still Mayer is a backup option to Bowers at the end of the day.
If Mayer does finally put together a strong season, he could become a top free agent target and he could make a ton of money. However, if he doesn’t produce much and he is blocked by Bowers’ presence in the offense, Mayer may look to move on to get a better chance elsewhere albeit on a likely modest contract.
So while, Mayer can return, the odds, at the moment probably point toward him being elsewhere in 2027.
