It was David vs. Goliath at the WNO 30 Open Weight Grand Prix, as several Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) stars from various weight divisions faced off in the tournament.
Renowned giant slayer and ADCC absolute medalist Dante Leon tipped the scales at just 177 lbs, then faced heavyweights as the smallest man in the WNO tournament. He beat two bigger men in Pat Shahgholi and Felipe Costa to make it to the final, only to face tournament favorite Declan Moody, who was 40 lbs heavier.
Leon entertained the crowd
and had nice leg lock attempts to start of the match, and again during the waning seconds. He was unable to get the finish though, and with Moody controlling good stretches of the contest, there would be no upset in the BJJ tournament. Moody’s pressure and passing weighed more in the judges’ eyes, and he earned a hard fought decision.
Moody to beat Justin Michael, Ryan Aitken and Leon to become the inaugural WNO open weight champion. This continues his recent string of dominance, following up on his ADCC 2026 European trials win in September.
After the final match, the Simple Man Martial Arts (formerly B-Team) star immediately called for another belt, asking to face WNO champ Pedro Marinho at 205 lbs next.
Outside of the tournament, teen phenom Sarah Galvao also put on another impressive performance at WNO 28, as she absolutely dominated Trinity Pun and finished the match by armbar.
In the other key bout, Filipino-American grappler Gavin Corbe scored a pretty big upset by winning a closely contested decision against Simple Man Martial Arts standout Owen Jones.
