Newcastle United is only days away from beginning the Premier League season, and in a worrying public appearance, Matthias Jaissle has acknowledged his squad remains some distance from the finished product.
The Magpies have lost Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon during yet another turbulent summer, while much of the money reinvested has gone toward young players who may need time before making an impact on the Premier League.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Sunday’s opener against Liverpool,
Jaissle made clear that Newcastle still needs reinforcements before the Sept. 1 deadline.
“For sure, there will be adjustments made, the needs are clear,” Jaissle said. “The management knows about the needs and we are all aligned. We will use the remaining time [in the transfer window] in the best possible way, but also we trust the players who are already here.”
Jaissle would not specify how many additions he expects, saying the number could also depend on departures. For now, neither of the two seems on the verge of happening.
“I would love to answer that with a clear number, but it’s depending also if players are leaving as well,” Jaissle said.
The German also conceded the timing of his appointment has left Newcastle scrambling to prepare after replacing Eddie Howe just a few weeks ago.
“You are aware, like I am, that we need to fix things in a short amount of time,” Jaissle said. “The timing was not ideal, but in football you cannot always have the perfect timing, so we need to do the best out of it.”
That process will definitely not be completed before Liverpool arrives at St. James’ Park on Sunday.
“We are for sure not 100 per cent against Liverpool,” Jaissle said.
