A recent departure from the 53-man roster in Foxborough will not be returning on the practice squad.
The New York Giants claimed outside linebacker Caleb Murphy off waivers from the New England Patriots
with the NFL’s No. 1 priority on Tuesday.
Murphy, 26, appeared in five games after being awarded off the waiver wire in October. The 6-foot-3, 254-pound core contributor totaled 79 snaps on special teams over that span. He had a hand in two tackles and also briefly spelled in off the edges of the defense.
Entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Grand Valley State and Ferris State in 2023, Murphy set the NCAA single-season record with 25.5 sacks while also tying the record with 39 tackles for loss as a senior. The two-time Division II national champion won the Gene Upshaw Award, Ted Hendricks Award and Cliff Harris Award along the way.
Murphy now stands 19 games into his NFL career. He has seen 439 snaps on defense and 808 snaps on special teams, totaling 19 tackles and splitting one sack.
“He was a very productive college player,” Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said in the fall. “He’s improved his fourth-down ability and has experience there.”
Murphy made stops with the Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Chargers before arriving at Gillette Stadium. He became the corresponding move to make room for inside linebacker Chad Muma, who officially signed off the practice squad of the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday.
