In the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 clash, Bayern Munich crushed Atalanta. It was never particularly close as Bayern scored three goals in each half and Atalanta’s goal did not occur until the final whistle. Bayern scored goals from five different players and assists from six unique teammates. Only Michael Olise claimed a brace after an eight-game scoring drought.
Surprisingly, Joshua Kimmich did not play a part in any of the goals. Nonetheless, he played the role of captain and applauded
everyone’s involvement, including the Atalanta fans.
“Unfortunately, we conceded a goal at the end,” said Kimmich (via @iMiaSanMia). “Otherwise, it was a very strong performance, especially in the first half. It took us about five minutes to get into the game. After that, we created one big chance after another. The way we played was impressive. We knew we could really hurt them. We also knew the atmosphere here would be fantastic. You can feel it now. I’ve never experienced a 6-1 win where the opposing fans were still cheering on their team like that after the game; it’s remarkable, it speaks volumes about the fans and the atmosphere here.”
The Atalanta fans gave a standing ovation to Olise after his second goal that was world class, then stuck around and clapped for both squads after the game.
