Michael Owen does not believe Harry Kane necessarily needs a Champions League trophy to become a Bayern Munich legend, although he admits winning Europe’s biggest prize would certainly strengthen the striker’s legacy.
That is a notable endorsement coming from Owen, who knows something about both individual excellence and the demands of playing for an elite European club. The former England striker enjoyed a decorated career with Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle United, and Manchester United, while
also winning the Ballon d’Or in 2001 after an outstanding year with Liverpool.
Owen’s argument is essentially that Kane’s legacy should not be reduced to one trophy. Since arriving in Munich, Kane has established himself as one of the most prolific scorers in Bayern history and has already collected domestic silverware. He recently reached 150 goals for the club in just 153 appearances, becoming the fastest player in Bayern Munich history to reach that milestone.
Owen explained why he believes Kane’s continued production could be enough to secure legendary status.
“I am not sure on that and it’s not necessarily the case. Harry Kane is breaking all kinds of records at Bayern Munich, winning many trophies domestically now and looks like he is fit and set to continue breaking their goalscoring records,” Owen told Casino Guru. “If he then signs a new deal to keep playing in Germany, and continues scoring at the same rate domestically and in the Champions League for them, he doesn’t necessarily have to win the Champions League to become a legend of the club.
“That being said, it could help cement his legacy for sure; both for Bayern and also personally.”
It is difficult to argue with the premise.
Kane has already made an extraordinary statistical impact, and another contract would give him additional time to climb Bayern’s all-time scoring charts. His Champions League numbers have also been remarkable, including a run of scoring in eight consecutive appearances in the competition.
Still, there is an obvious reason the Champions League keeps coming up whenever Kane’s Bayern Munich legacy is discussed.
Domestic dominance is expected, while European success is what separates the club’s greatest eras from the merely successful ones. Kane has already helped deliver Bundesliga titles, but lifting the Champions League trophy would provide the defining moment that would make his story in Munich even harder to dispute.
Owen is correct that Kane can become a legend without it.
But if Kane does eventually lead Bayern Munich to European glory, his legacy will not merely be secure. It could become one of the greatest individual stories in the club’s history.
