Well, nobody saw this one coming …
In a completely shocking turn of events, two of the greatest boxers of all time — Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather Jr. — have officially agreed to fight each other in an exhibition boxing match next spring, according to a joint announcement today by CSI SPORT and FIGHT SPORTS.
The blockbuster showdown has no set date or location just yet.
Tyson confirmed the news on social media.
Tyson, 59, admitted he was as stunned as anyone that
Mayweather signed on the dotted line.
“This fight is something neither the world nor I ever thought would or could happen,” Tyson said. “However, boxing has entered a new era of the unpredictable, and this fight is as unpredictable as it gets. I still can’t believe Floyd wants to really do this,” he added. “It’s going to be detrimental to his health, but he wants to do it, so it’s signed and it’s happening!”
Mayweather, 48, sees no threat in “Iron” Mike.
“I’ve been doing this for 30 years and there hasn’t been a single fighter that can tarnish my legacy,” Mayweather said. “You already know that if I am going to do something, it’s going to be big and it’s going to be legendary. I’m the best in the business of boxing. This exhibition will give the fans what they want.”
Tyson hasn’t competed since his high-profile exhibition loss to Jake Paul earlier this year — a spectacle billed as the “most-streamed sporting event in history.” Mayweather, meanwhile, was last seen battering John Gotti III in their bizarre rematch, even replacing a referee mid-fight.
Two eras. Two legends. And now, somehow, one surreal matchup.
Stay tuned, because the circus is only just getting started.
