Following Terence Crawford’s big win over Canelo Alvarez to become undisputed super middleweight champion, Crawford was honored in his hometown of Omaha for his accomplishments and he spent some time talking
to the public about what’s it has meant for him to have achieved so much in the sport before a parade held in his honor.
“I’m happy for this moment, I’m happy for the support that Omaha has been giving me over the years,” Crawford said. “I would say I’m blessed. It’s been a roller coaster but we made it to the top. No matter how we made it, we made it and it’s definitely a testament] to say anything is possible if you work hard at it and you believe in yourself and you have the faith to keep going no matter what.
“Coming from Omaha no one thinks you’re capable of doing [extraordinary things]. They just think small town, we don’t have no great athletes, we don’t have no great actors, rappers, they just look over us and everything that we do. And most of the people that make it from Omaha, they don’t come and give back…
“It was very important for me to stay in Omaha to give those young individuals hope and to be able to see a person that’s at the top of the world in their craft and in their sport, and for them to say I can actually physically see him and touch him and know that it’s possible.”
As it would happen, not very long after Crawford’s celebratory parade things would take a dark turn as Crawford would later be captured on camera being detained at gunpoint by local police officers during a traffic stop. Crawford would eventually be released but it created a story even Omaha’s mayor felt the need to respond to.
In any event, you can at least watch the inspiring part with Crawford full address to the public before that happened in the video link at the top!
