The Michigan Wolverines will have a good balance of veteran talent and young newcomers on this year’s team, and if they are going to achieve their goals, those vets will really have to step up. It will be their job to lead this team and get the younger guys ready to contribute in meaningful ways. One player who will be responsible for some of those veteran duties is senior cornerback Jyaire Hill.
The story so far
Hill came to Michigan at a good time, as he was able to become a national champion during his freshman
season. He attended Kankakee High School in Illinois before coming to Ann Arbor, and he was a four-star recruit in the 2023 class.
In high school, Hill got a lot of attention from top college programs across the country, and specifically in the Big Ten. Because of his Midwest roots, Big Ten teams recruited him hard, and he decided to commit to Jim Harbaugh and Michigan in Dec. 2022.
It didn’t take Hill very long to see the field at Michigan, as he made his college debut in Week 1 of his freshman season against East Carolina. He earned Defensive Freshman of the Week honors for that performance after racking up four tackles and one tackle for loss. Despite a strong Week 1, it ended up being a pretty quiet year for Hill, as he finished with eight tackles.
The 2024 season was Hill’s breakout year, as he played in every game and started in nine. He finished the year with 35 tackles, eight passes defended one interception and one sack. Hill solidified himself as one of the top players in Michigan’s secondary, and he parlayed that into a successful 2025 season. Last year, he racked up 36 tackles, five passes defended, one interception, one sack and one forced fumble.
Outlook for 2026
There are definitely some question marks on this Michigan defense heading into the 2026 season, as depth is a bit of a concern across the board. However, the secondary appears to be in pretty good shape heading into the season, and veterans like Hill are a big reason why.
Hill, senior Zeke Berry, sixth-year senior Rod Moore, senior Memphis transfer Chris Bracy and Utah transfer Smith Snowden are expected to start in the secondary. All these guys are upperclassmen with multiple years of starting experience, and they have all put up some impressive numbers throughout their careers. If they all play to the level they are capable of, this unit is going to be lockdown.
As for Hill, expectations couldn’t be higher. This is his third season with a major role, and he has shown some very impressive traits the last two seasons. A couple things that have stood out about him are his physicality and his confidence. Hill isn’t afraid to go hit somebody, and he wants to go seek it out. That is the type of mentality this defense needs to have everywhere.
Everything we have seen leading up to this point in his career suggests this will be a big season for Hill. He has already done a lot of good things for this program, and with all the talent around him, he should be at his best. If he meets expectations, it probably means this secondary had a really good season.
