In Saturday’s ACC Action, Virginia beat Syracuse 72-59, Louisville got by Wake Forest 88-80, NC State took care of Virginia Tech 82-73, SMU knocked off Pitt 86-67, Miami got a tough game from BC before prevailing 74-68, Florida State squeaked past Notre Dame 82-79, Stanford dismissed Georgia Tech 95-72 and Clemson slammed Cal 77-55.
For various reasons, we won’t be able o get in much detail about Saturday’s games, but a few points: first, Clemson is now tied with Duke for first place in the league.
Second, for the first time since the David Thompson era, which ended in 1975, NC State has won six straight ACC games. That’s astonishing. We had no idea it had been that long.
Boston College is underwater at 9-14 but that team plays hard and it has some talent, just not enough. Don’t be surprised if they pull off a stunner down the stretch. They’re capable.
Remember when Florida State lost five straight – the first time? They were getting killed. They had another five-game losing streak and those games were very competitive. And now they’ve won four of the last five. He’ll never get it, but Luke Loucks should get consideration for ACC Coach of the Year. Who else has done a better job, assuming the definition goes beyond just winning?
We said we weren’t sure that Georgia Tech could control Ebuda Okorie and man was that right…he lit them up for 40. Just consider for a moment the ACC All-Rookie team: Cameron Boozer, Caleb Wilson and Okorie are all locks. Who else makes it? That’s going to be very interesting to see.
No games until Monday when NC State puts its win streak on the line at Louisville. That’s a compelling game because State has rounded into form and Louisville, while winning, is not playing great. That’s a great opportunity for the Pack and a great danger for the Cards.
