According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Kansas City Chiefs are poaching quarterback Shane Buechele from the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad.
Under NFL rules, any player signed from another
team’s practice squad must spend at least three weeks on the new team’s active roster, so Buechele can be expected to be part of Kansas City’s roster for the rest of the season.
This signing comes in the wake of quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his backup Gardner Minshew sustaining serious knee injuries in successive weeks. Mahoems was placed on the team’s Reserve/Injured list last week. It’s a good bet that Minshew is about to land there, which would open up a roster spot for Buechele.
The former SMU quarterback — now 27 — was an undrafted free agent who spent much of the 2021 season on the Kansas City practice squad before being activated to the roster in mid-November. He remained with the team until the final roster cutdown before the 2023 season. He’s been with Buffalo since then.
Buechele has yet to appear in an NFL game.
