With tomorrow’s welterweight title fight set between WBC champion Ryan Garcia and challenger Conor Benn, both fighters appeared for a final press conference before the end up squaring off in the ring on Saturday night. Here’s some of what both fighters had to say with full highlights of the festivities in the video link below.
Benn on Garcia saying he’s struggling making the weight
“I think he needs to just worry about himself, he seems to have enough problems as it is. So I just focus on me, I don’t look at him. I don’t care what he does. Ultimately I care about what I do.
I feel unbelievable, cut no corners, and we’re here now. We’ll see who makes weight tomorrow.”
Garcia on Benn saying he’s not a real Mexican
“What the f-ck he knows about that? He’s from the UK. He don’t know sh-t. Come Saturday night when his blood is spilling out of his mouth, that’ll be enough to show him how Mexican I am.”
Benn on his plans to shock fans with his performance
“I’m just going to go in there and do what I do. I work extremely hard and give 110% in training camp and I’m here to bring the belt home. Ultimately, I want to give the fans the fights they want…I’ll make the weight tomorrow, easy. No problem. And I’m prepared for a hard fight. I’ve never shied away from a fight, never shied away from a challenge.”
Garcia on his expectations for the fight
“He’s going to try real hard, we know that. He’s probably going to have to try to resort to some dirty tactics so we’ll be prepared for that, and we’re just going to do what we do best which is stay sharp, be prepared for everything, and we’re prepared and we’re conditioned. And we’ll put on a hell of a show, I promise you that.
“Let me let him in on a little secret. Even if he makes the weight, your brain can’t rehydrate fast enough. Them punches are going to do real damage. And I heard his dad talking about he was going to knock me out — bet he won’t. Your son ain’t going to knock me out, he couldn’t even knockout Regis. Your dad lying to you, I hope you know that.”
