I’m not really sure precisely why the Big East waited until the final matches of the 2025 volleyball season were played before announcing the bracketing for the conference tournament. None of the Sunday
matches had any impact on the seeding as Creighton had locked up the outright title with a win on Saturday, and Villanova had done the same thing with the #3 seed in their finale on Saturday as well.
But that’s what they did, and now we know the schedule of events at the McGuire Center in Milwaukee this coming weekend.
Creighton is the regular season champion after going 16-0 in the league this season. They clinched the outright title on Saturday with a win over Seton Hall. They had to go all the way to their season finale to do that, as Xavier was sitting with one loss up until Marquette got a 3-1 win on the Musketeers on Sunday. The Musketeers had long since locked up a top two seed in the conference tournament as both Marquette and Villanova went into the final weekend of the regular season with five losses and XU didn’t get their second league defeat until Marquette handed it to them on Sunday.
Marquette and Villanova stayed on five losses at the end of the season with both teams getting two wins in the final weekend of the regular season. That keeps them tied for third place at 11-5, but because the Wildcats scored the 3-1 win at Jake Nevin Fieldhouse on October 25th, the only meeting between the two teams, that gives VU the #3 seed and makes Marquette the #4 while hosting the tournament. Fourth out of four isn’t perhaps where head coach Tom Mendoza wanted to end up this season, but it’s definitely better than finishing fifth and missing the tournament that MU is hosting alltogether.
#1 Creighton and #4 Marquette will collide in the first of the two semifinals matches, because of course they will. Why have the home team in the second half of the doubleheader when maaaaaybe that means you get home team fans filtering in during the first match when you can guarantee that a bunch of them will just leave after their team is done playing?? In any case, that match is set for Noon Central time on Saturday, November 22nd. #2 Xavier will tangle with #3 Villanova in the second semifinal, which is scheduled for 2:30pm Central time.
The winners advance to Sunday’s Big East championship match, which is scheduled for 2pm Central and will be broadcast on ESPN2. A win over Creighton after taking the Bluejays to five sets in Omaha would be a superb result for Marquette relative to their NCAA tournament profile, but I know the history of Marquette/Creighton, so let’s say I’m not going hold my breath waiting for that win on Saturday.
