At this point, the entire footballing world knows about Michael Olise’s quality. The Bayern Munich winger had already excelled at Crystal Palace, but he has somehow improved exponentially—even beyond those high standards—during his two years in Germany. His current form for France and Bayern firmly puts him in the conversation for best player in the world, making him utterly invaluable to the Bavarians.
This makes upcoming contract talks for Olise tricky. How much will the Frenchman ask for, and will Bayern
be able to meet his demands? Of course, Bayern will offer him top dollar to stay. However, according to Sport Bild (as reported by @iMiaSanMia), the Frenchman will certainly want a release clause inserted into his new contract:
Initial contract talks with Michael Olise are set to begin soon. Bayern’s management is preparing for significantly more difficult negotiations with Olise than with Harry Kane. So far, the Frenchman and his agent Glen Tweneboah have given no indication as to whether the player is open to a contract extension beyond 2029. Bayern would like to offer Olise a new deal until 2032 and place him in the category of the top earners with Kane and Musiala. From the player’s entourage, it is said Olise’s camp would definitely want a release clause included in any potential new deal. A release clause that exceeds €200m would be realistic in Olise’s case.
BFW Analysis
Olise’s potential request for a release clause should come as no surprise, given his insistence on inserting release clauses into his contracts at previous clubs Reading FC and Crystal Palace at every opportunity. His current deal with Bayern is his first professional contract that does not contain one. This gives Bayern a slight advantage in negotiations, as plenty of time remains on Olise’s current deal and they have no obligation to let him leave before its expiration in 2029. Could the Bavarians use this leverage to delay the activation of any release clause until at least 2029? After all, it would make little sense to renew Olise’s contract with a release clause that gives Bayern less control over his future in 2027 or 2028 than their current deal does.
However, there will be strong interest in Olise regardless of the reported release clause amount. Real Madrid and Liverpool FC were heavily linked with him over the summer, and it is hard to imagine a team that wouldn’t love to have him—which naturally strengthens his camp’s negotiating position. These negotiations will be difficult and hugely important for Bayern.
Furthermore, how will FIFA’s new rules on release clauses (which take effect on January 1, 2027) factor into all of this? Will every contract eventually require a release clause, rendering this entire discussion moot? Major questions remain as Bayern look set to open conversations on retaining arguably their best player.
