Mikey Caliendo defied the odds on Friday and scored an impressive win over Olympic champion Jordan Burroughs at RAF 14.
While Caliendo has his own credentials, Burroughs is widely considered one of the greatest wrestlers of all-ime and through two matches in RAF he hadn’t allowed a point scored against him. That all changed early in the match when Caliendo attacked right away and snatched a takedown to open the match.
Caliendo then began mirroring Burroughs’ movements and at one point even stuffed
a blast double leg to maintain his position.
By the third period, Caliendo was up 5-0 but Burroughs nearly mounted a comeback when he went on the offensive and starting adding up some points of his own. Caliendo finally counered with another two-point move as Burroughs tried desperately to mount a comeback but time ran out on him.
When the match was over the final score read 7-5 with Caliendo getting the victory and handing Burroughs his first loss in RAF.
Afterwards, Caliendo celebrated by calling for a title shot.
“I don’t care who it is but I want the belt,” Caliendo shouted.
It’s a huge win for Caliendo and a surprising setback for Burroughs, who at 38 had still looked as dominant as ever prior to this loss.
