Opening weekend magic in the PMAC strikes twice.
The LSU volleyball team won their second match of the weekend with a 3-1 victory over Incarnate Word Saturday night. With the win, the Tigers open their season 2-0 with their first perfect opening weekend since 2017, while the Cardinals fall to 0-2.
LSU won set one 25-20. The Tigers took multiple seven-point leads during the set and outhit the Cardinals .371 to .286.
UIW won set two 27-25. The Cardinals took the lead early, but LSU fought back for a 15-11
lead at the media timeout. The Cardinals outhit the Tigers .188 to .119 in the set.
LSU dominated set three 25-11 with several large runs. The Tigers dominated the Cardinals by outhitting them .480 to .029.
LSU finished things off in set four by winning 25-19. After starting up 10-5, UIW went on a 7-1 run to take a lead. LSU’s 6-1 run of their own set things in motion for the win. LSU led hitting .250 to .167 in the set.
Overall, LSU outhit UIW .281 to .169. Jurnee Robinson led the scoring again with 22 kills, six blocks and two aces, and she completed a double-double with 14 digs. Setter Takyla Brown had a double-double with 43 assists and 23 digs. Freshman libero Kiley Brooks also got in on the party with 12 assists and 16 digs.
LSU moves to 1-0 all-time against Incarnate Word. The team’s next two games will be in the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as part of the inaugural SEC/Big 10 Challenge. The Tigers will play Michigan State at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1 on Big 10 Network and will play Michigan the next day at 6 on B1G+. LSU’s last win over a B1G team outside the PMAC came over Northwestern in 2017 in a game played at USF. LSU has only won one true road game against a B1G team, and that came on September 19, 1987, with a 3-2 win over Purdue.
