As is tradition, the Big East has fired out the preseason poll for men’s basketball before I can get a cup of coffee in me on Media Day.
This is a Marquette blog site, so let’s focus on the Golden Eagles:
Marquette was picked by the vote of the Big East coaches to finish fifth in the league this season. They finished with 60 points, falling four points behind Providence in fourth place and three points ahead of sixth place Georgetown. Over in the individual player voting, Chase Ross is one of the six men voted to the Preseason All-Big East First Team, although that team doesn’t include Preseason Player of the Year Zuby Eijofor from St. John’s.
The battle for the top spot in the preseason poll was close, as St. John’s finished first with seven first place votes and 97 points. UConn was right behind them with the other four first place votes and 94 points. It would seem that those two are in a tier together, Creighton has a tier by themselves, and spots 4 though 7 are a tier together, as there’s really not that big of a gap between them.
Marquette has not released a press release on the voting, instead linking off to the Big East press release. That means I’ll drop in this note on Chase Ross’ inclusion on the all-Big East First Team:
Marquette senior guard Chase Ross averaged 10.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists for the Golden Eagles last year. His 61 steals (1.79/game) ranked fifth in the league. He is a two-time BIG EAST All-Academic team selection.
And this is what the team poll release had to say about Marquette’s placement in that list:
Marquette is the coaches’ choice for fifth. The Golden Eagles were 23-11 a season ago, advancing to their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament. Despite losing their top three scorers, Marquette returns 10 players – including a pair of starters in preseason All-BIG EAST guard Chase Ross and Ben Gold. Guard Sean Jones, who missed the 2024-25 campaign due to injury, also returns.
Marquette gets the season started on Monday, November 3rd, with a home game against Albany. Tipoff at Fiserv Forum is set for 7pm Central, and ESPN+ will have the broadcast. Before that, you can make your way down to Fiserv Forum on Thursday, October 23rd, for an open practice starting at 6pm Central.
