Last year’s NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year is adding another award to the trophy case. After his dominant performance versus the Detroit Lions on Sunday night, Tetairoa McMillan was recently announced as the winner of the Week 4 NFC Offensive Player of the Week.
McMillan’s career best statistical performance consisted of 14 catches for 192 yards and 2 touchdowns. While just shy of the franchise record of receiving yards in a single game, he will get the bragging rights of being the first wide receiver
in franchise history to earn the accolade.
The award dates back to at least 1984, so despite being around for the entirety of their careers, Steve Smith, Muhsin Muhammad, DJ Moore nor Brenton Bersin ever took it home.
Steve Smith did win NFC Special Teams Player of the Week in 2002, though, after returning 2 punts for touchdowns against the Minneosota Vikings – a game in which he also had over 140 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown.
McMillan’s performance came at just the right time, allowing the Panthers to even up the win-loss record to 2-2 before entering the bye week. With the anticipated return of Jalen Coker, the Panthers top duo of receivers will hope to continue establishing themselves as one of the premiere combos in the league.
