Newcastle United are awaiting clarity on the severity of Bruno Guimaraes’ ankle injury after the midfielder limped off during Wednesday’s Champions League win over PSV, according to a report by Daily Mail’s
Craig Hope.
Hope reported that Newcastle are “still sweating on the severity of the ankle injury suffered by Bruno Guimaraes during the 3-0 win over PSV on Wednesday,” with concern inside the club following his early exit from the midweek game.
After the match, Eddie Howe acknowledged the issue and explained why the situation raised concern.
“He’s a little bit sore and there’s a little bit of swelling around his ankle,” Howe said. “We hope it’s not serious but it’s difficult to know.”
Added Howe: “It’s a worry that he’s had to come off.”
Hope reported that “the word overnight was that Guimaraes’ problem did not look too bad,” but added that the assessment was “met with caution on Thursday” as the club waited for further checks.
Howe is expected to provide an update on Friday morning ahead of Sunday’s Premier League match against Aston Villa, Hope wrote.
Guimaraes went down injured late in the first half and initially tried to continue. He eventually signaled to the bench and left the pitch just before the break, with Lewis Miley coming on in his place.
Despite the injury, Newcastle went on to win 3-0, with goals from Yoane Wissa, Anthony Gordon, and Harvey Barnes. The result keeps them in contention to finish in the top eight of the Champions League league phase, with a place in the knockout phase already guaranteed.
